- 'Tactile Hands'  Solo Show 2023-

Our hands, feet, mouth, ears, nose and eyes directly encounter the world's surfaces. Our tongue, body and maneuvering skills are the tactile means to experience the earth beneath us.

Visual perception alone remains limited and dulls our desire to run, hit and tangibly interact with surfaces.

My works engage with the active spaces we move through. Not only the physical surfaces, but also the sensory environments surrounding the work become palpable.

This curious zone stimulates our hands, feet, mouth, nose, ears and eyes.

The works I create using my own "seed system" embrace these tactile spaces, making them perceptible through our entire sensory system.

Q1. Please introduce yourself, focusing on the theme of your work and your working method.

My work explores sculptural canvas and tactile painting qualities that illuminate how we perceive the world around us through our sensory system.

I build up and break down painted surface waves using my own "paper seed" units, consisting of bold, densely juxtaposed hand-dyed colors. This creates a very subtle interplay between the paper's architectural structure - these elements never remain static.

The construction of my pieces evolves in a quiet, consistent manner all day long. My process produces ongoing revisions over days, weeks and seasons.

Our sensory experiences seem to affirm the delicacy and accuracy of perceiving all the subtle changes reflected in the work. However, the sensory records of each passing day prove quite fragile and not reliably consistent from one moment of revision to the next.

Ultimately, the inevitable quiet revisions are not meant to be monumental, but devotedly faithful to each poignant, fleeting moment unfolding here and now.

Q2. What is the most distinctive feature of your artwork that sets you apart from other artists?

My works function as living architecture or an ever-growing tree, not as static wall hangings. The quality does not come from the infusion or representation of the artist's thoughts. This presence comes from the instant perception of the artwork's "liveness", "velocity", and its "growing up" quality, usually associated with living plants or animals. The works remind us how our sensory experience not only helps but also betrays our tactile understanding of the world. However, through this betrayal, the next dimension of each evolution opens up.

- Real Life Architecture (2022 Solo Show) -

"If your image does not grow,

If your frame does not change,

If your perspective does not keep a record of yesterday,

Your work has not been working for you, but for others."

The chaos we experienced these past two and a half years has reminded us that there are things that exist just outside the boundaries of our ever-growing knowledge of the world. During that chaotic time, Ilhwa Kim created artworks which she calls "live architecture" because through them, we can explore how we encounter and come to know the world with our tactile senses. I see them as ever-evolving monuments to the architecture of our sensory experiences.

THE SEED AS METAPHOR

When we plant a seed in a vase, we are both curious and expectant. We quickly begin to have expectations about what the seed will become. As we watch the seed grow over time from a seedling to a small plant and maybe into a small tree, we're always surprised and a bit disappointed because it never happens exactly the way we expect. Our understanding of the seed always contains some extent of betrayal of our initial expectations. This experience of betrayed expectation also happens when we grow into adulthood and beyond. Surprise and betrayal are part of growing up.

REAL LIFE ARCHITECTURE

As Kim worked on her live architecture, she intentionally included the attributes of surprise and betrayal because without them, her live architecture cannot grow and change.

Cezanne was right in saying that our senses do not represent the outer world as it is. However, this does not mean we cannot or do not have to represent things as they are. Without knowing the surface of an apple, for instance, we cannot learn how to cut the apple or how to make juice out of it. Tactile transactions are the building blocks of our interactions with the world. Cezanne simply pointed out the "chasm" between our sense perception and real understanding of the world.

This chasm is not for us to deny, but to observe and explore. This is the core of Ilhwa Kim's 2022 solo show and the reason she titled it "Real Life Architecture". "Real Life Architecture" artworks remind us of the chasm between everyday senses and tactile reality, and how this chasm betrays us, forcing us to explore deeper, evolve, and grow.

A TACTILE RECORD OF PERSONAL HISTORIES

"I began my career with painting but was frustrated with it when I found my body moved faster than my hands or my plan as I worked. When moving from painting to sculpture, I wanted to do everything I was able to do in painting," especially using brush strokes and a wide range of colored paints. However, Kim didn't want to portray another three-dimensional Cezanne's apple in her paper sculpture. She needed her works to have a stronger real-life presence and contain the architecture of our sensory evolution.

When you spend enough time with her work at various distances and in different surroundings, her work begins to function as a tactile record of your personal histories. As time passes, the record becomes a sensory monument that contains the surprise, the betrayal, and the chasm of personal growth.

Kim's real-life architecture tries to understand the dynamism and the betrayal of our real-life everyday experience. The live architecture keeps a record of the changing boundaries of our sensory map; between the mountain and the river, between you and me, between my yesterday and our tomorrow.

The Evolution of Seed System> (2022)

- ‘천하도’(Cheonhado/Seed_universe, 2016)에서

'Seed' as a Tiny Universe

- 2015 Guangzhou Opera House Solo Show

Ilhwa Kim's work 'Seed_universe 天下圖' is composed of tens of thousands of small seed-like units. Each seed unit combines straight lines and circles, forming a tiny individual universe in Kim's unique conceptual approach.

The materials are not pre-manufactured but created by hand for each individual seed universe. Kim meticulously dyes sheets of paper with thousands of different colors and then cuts and rolls the layered paper to make each unit rigid. No two seed universes are identical in shape, appearance, or color within her work.

As the tens of thousands of seed universes come together to form the entire installation, a single unified piece is created. However, the sense of completion is never final, as each new perspective betrays the previous one. The surface and essence of the work are in constant flux from morning until night - endless undulating waves formed by the 'paper seed' units, bold and densely juxtaposed hand-dyed colors, and subtle interplays of reflected light between the Hanji paper units.

Kim's universe undergoes a dramatic transformation between close and distant viewpoints. The tiny seed units crafted by her hands appear firm and rigid up close, but the accumulative forms move with a tender, fluid dynamism. A gently relaxed dialogue plays out between the sculptural physicality and the painterly, tactile qualities. Her universe dissolves distinctions between sculpture and painting. The tactile universes defy having an optimal single vantage point.

Though the 'Seed_universe' installation itself is static, it endlessly reforms and shifts with every moment, achieving unseen dynamic balances between the humble, tranquil seed elements.

'Cheonhado
- 2016 Dennos Museum 'Seed Universe

Ilhwa Kim's 'Seed Universe 天下圖' work is constructed from rolled paper units. The collective arrangement of these rolled paper elements is in a perpetual state of flux, recording all the spatial changes occurring within the moment.

Kim's 'Seed Universe' was originally inspired by the anonymous world map 'Cheonhado (天下圖)' from the 17th-18th century Joseon dynasty, a time before surveying and aerial views existed. It was an imaginative depiction of the world order at that period.

Kim aims to construct a new version of 'Cheonhado 天下圖,' which serves as a daily record of our living spaces. The tender yet surprisingly visible aspect becomes how to reflect all the spatial changes occurring in the present moment. The momentary map becomes an internal landscape for viewers to wander through.

Kim's sculptural canvas and tactile painting quality initiate sensory updates of her Cheonhado; endless undulating waves formed by her 'paper seed' units, bold and densely juxtaposed hand-dyed colors, and very subtle reflections between the 'Hanji' paper units. Kim's new map is revised in a quiet and constant manner.

This new 'Cheonhado' also continually questions and collects our sensory records. For a moment, our sensory records prove to be delicate and accurate by recognizing all the changes reflected in her 'Cheonhado.' However, inversely, the sensory records accumulated over the day turn out to be quite fragile and undependable due to the work's numerous revisions.

Kim's 'Cheonhado' achieves a unique moment map through its own constant updates within the installation space. The momentary map keeps changing all day long. Now, Cheonhado's purpose is not to be 'ephemeral' but to be decisively loyal to each emotional moment here and now.
